The block is in the milling machine without caps so it sits securely on the pan rails. The deck surface is leveled and the large cutter head (upper left) is lowered and adjusted to take the appropriate amount off the deck surface. The large cutter head rotates and the table moves the block slowly toward the left until the full deck surface has been cut (milled).

Cylinder Block

Once cleaned, you can inspect the block more closely and, with your machinist, determine the bore size that it requires. After you determine the amount of wear that the cylinder bore has and the amount of out-of-roundness the bore exhibits, the final bore is indicated, which is often 3.91 inches for the 4.0 engine (.030-inch oversize).
